| 25 Nov | The was an excursion to the Belconnen Bowling Club, Beetaloo St, Hawker arriving at 10AM. Members played in small teams and were guided by a club member. There was no meeting at the Shed except for exercise classes at 8.30AM | 33 |

| 11 Nov | We held a Remembrance Day Special with president Roger Amos reading out more letters from his uncle Stan Willis (Stan’s Letters #2) who went to France in WW1 & did not return. Others including Don displayed some WW2 bayonets, Stuart talk about & showed medals from his wifes family & Ray Osmotherly read out a letter from the Red Cross about his dead relative. Some poems were read out & we had a minutes silence combined with reading the ode. More details | 47 |
| 4 Nov | Stuart Allan gave a talk about sailing from its earlyist around 5500BC through to modern days, as well as Australia’s participation in the Olypics. Stuart has sailed at Canberra Yacht Club in Canberra since the mid-70s & currently sails a one person Laser dinghy, an Olympic class. He has raced at club, state, Australian & international levels, most recently in Mexico at the Laser Masters Worlds. He has also cruised yachts on east coast Australia, Tasmania, & in Turkey, Croatia, & completed transpacific crossing from Tahiti to Fiji | 48 |
| 27 Oct | 28 Shed members travelled to Wee Jasper for a conducted tour of Carey’s Cave whilst others remained at the Shed for Coffee & Chat organised by Don Gruber. The guide at the caves was Geoff who told us the history of the cave & how the various limestone formations occurred. The limestone in the area is some 400 million years old & very hard. After our tour we visited the Duck ‘n’ Fishes Café at Cooradigbee Homestead which was about 4 Km from the caves for a welcome lunch & then departed for home around 4:00pm after a great day | 40 |

| 16 Sep | Pulses Day with Erica Roughton, & Ray Osmotherly described the ways in which model ships can be built, either from a kit or from scratch from a plan. Ray showed a number of slides of the painstaking work involved in building a model from scratch & some of the specialist tools that are req’d. Mike Dwyer has published a book about the experiences of many of Parkinson’s ACT members. The book is now on sale and Mike Dwyer spent a few minutes talking to us about it. Erica’s presentation was followed by a barbecue with a difference as we tried out lentil burgers & hummus although sausage sangers were available for the old timers who could not hack the alternatives | 46 |

| 26 Aug | In keeping with the theme of the 8th anniversary of Melba Shed, Roger Amos, Bob Salmond, Arend Bleyerveen & Tony Rogers talked about what they remembered about the time of their 8th birthday. Roger explained in his early tears they didn’t celebrate birthdays until you were 10; Bob told the story of Holland Park where the United States Army established a 3,000 bed Holland Park Military Hospital in early 1943; Arend was born in Holland and spent his early life during the hostilities of the Second World War; Tony Rogers told a fascinating story of being strafed by fighters in the UK, evacuation to Australia with his mother during which their ship, the Rotorua, was attacked in the Caribbean; Don Gruber told of the Shed’s history. Don, a keen members of Ginninderra Rotary Club created a Rotary project to form a Men’s Shed in the Ginninderra area; Following the Shed’s visit to the National Dinosaur Museum last week, our friendly resident scientist, Dr Alex Ritchie, enlightened us further about the museum, dinosaurs, fossils, human sculls and more. He gave us a history of the establishment of the museum; To celebrate our 8th Anniversary on 29 Aug, we had a cake | 43 |

It showed photos of exotic buildings in Putrajaya (Malaysia’s equivalent to Canberra), Singapore’s ‘Gardens by the Bay’ tourist attraction, Saigon’s ‘Floriade’ for Asian New Year, & Hong Kong’s Chinese New Year – the equivalent of Sydney’s ‘Vivid’ or Canberra’s ‘Enlighten’. We also heard from Mateja Koštrica, daughter of Jožica Koštrica of the Slovenian Embassy and a student at nearby St Francis Xavier College in Florey about the Honey Breakfast and John Grubb of the Beekeepers Assocn of the ACT gave an overview of bees & beekeeping. | 15 May | Melissa Aveyard a StrokeSafe Ambassador from the National Stroke Foundation talked to us from personal experience. She woke up one morning and couldn’t walk properly, she couldn’t feel her left hand side, it felt like the worst pins and needles she had ever experienced. By the time Melissa went to hospital she could no longer walk. Her talk told us of her experience and focussed on how to identify that someone has suffered a stroke and what you need to do to assist them More info (49 members signed the sheets) | 49 |

We also welcomed back guest speaker Ian Foster, a volunteer guide from the Australian War Memorial, who talked about the origins of the Anzac commemorations. | 22 Aug | The Shed went on an excursion to Lake Bathurst Museum. We departed about 9.40AM and reached the Museum by 10.50AM taking around 88Km. The best route is via Macs Reef Road. Right into Bungendore Road. Left into Tarago Road at the first Roundabout at Bungendore. Then left into Braidwood Road at Tarago, then 6kms. There was a $10 per head entry fee. The Museum is small but contains a large array of old paraphernalia about railway history, anything associated about Bathurst & Lake Bathurst as well as interesting details about the nearby WWII fuel storage tanks. Its owned by Colin & Jan Dennett. See this site about Lake Bathurst and its history and this one specifically about the Museum with a short video with directions. We also visited the historic old St John’s Anglican Church & cemetery (1860) just north of the Museum and Roslea Cafe. Afterwards around one quarter had lunch at the Roselea cafe (where everything is home made) and the rest at the Loaded Dog Hotel in Tarago. We all made it back by about 2.45PM. 18 Oct | The Shed held its 5th Anniversary Luncheon & Official Opening of the Shed Extension. We were honoured with attendances of Bernie Rees (“the builder”), MLAs Yvette Berry & Mary Porter, our co-sponsors, the North Belconnen Uniting Church (Greg Ewers), as well Greenhills (Peter Badowski & Colin Greef) & Rotary members to help us celebrate. Bernie was presented with and engraved wooden box provided by Laurie Power with memorial photos of his work on the shed extension on the inside cover. We had organised for Ron Quarmby Spit-Roast Specialists to cater for us & our guests. At the end there was special entertainment provided by the Tuggeranong Ukulele Quintet minus 1. Finally three Shed members, Ted Tregillgas, Calum Reid & Harry Williams spoke elegantly & sincerely about ‘What the Shed Means to Me’. John Mulrine provided the PA sound equipment for the Celebration. This was so successful that the Shed will proceed with acquiring a permanent PA system (45 members attended along with 15 guests) Full details in Newsletter #203 | 45 |

His trip took 3.5 years and covered 45,000 nautical miles in a 43ft long 12ft wide homemade yacht built on his Burra property. The Woodlawn Bioreactor is owned by the French company Veolia Environnement & was previously an open-cut mine producing copper, lead & zinc. The bioreactor is believed to be the largest of its type in the world. About 20 members went to lunch at the Tarago Hotel. 23 Aug | The Shed went on an excursion to National Arboretum & Bonsai Centre. We were guided by Irene Davies starting outside on the northern deck. It was soon decided that we were going to receive the talk from the inside we went to the restaurant part & Irene was able to point out some of the different forests & attractions. She gave a history of the Arboretum. In 2004, after the fires & because the area was part of the National Open Space System and as there were other Arboreta around, (Cork, Himalayan pine, pencil pine) it was decided to build the National Arboretum on the site. The Salvos are classified as “Philanthropic” within Defence along with the Red Cross, YMCA and RSL, etc. Nigel showed us his converted Landcruiser that contains all sorts of drinks, hot and cold, that he takes around and offers to diggers training or on exercises. He has practiced meditation since the 1970’s and now tries to meditate twice a day for 30 mins each time (33 members signed the book) Noel also runs meditation sessions in the local prison as well as other places. 1 Feb | Ray Nelson spoke about his intimate knowledge about how Boomerangs fly; why some do not return and some do. The thing that gives the boomerangs their lift are the flutes you get on one side, which then allows them better curves and more mass and thus better killing ability. Real boomerangs do not return and are used for hunting and fighting. These sort can fly up to 150m and can be lethal at 100m. (43 members signed the book) | 43 |

In the sanctuary lots of birds were seen including a brolga, a couple of bower birds and a pair of currawongs titillating one another and then doing it. The guys left the shed around 8.30AM and were back around 3PM, after also viewing progress on the Cotter Dam. 18 Nov | Walk: Aranda Bushland & Cork Plantation. 10 of us walked from Aranda through the Frost Hollow Walk to the Snow Gums area of Aranda Bushlands and then on to the Cork Plantation adjacent to the National Aboretum. 12 Nov | The Shed went on a guided visit to the National Botanic Gardens which started at 10.30AM. Members had to pay $4 each to pay for the guides. Members broke into three groups. One group looked more particularly at the Mallee Scrub section and the Rainforest walk. They learnt that Australia only has true tropical Rainforest covering about 0.1% of its land mass, with the biggest concentrations in Queensland. (17 members attended) | 17 |
11 Nov | Walk: Gungahlin Hill – Gungaderra NR. 5 of us started walking from Gungahlin Hill on Barton Highway. We went to the Trig and then across to a couple of features in Gungaderra NR. The hill (GN44) just east of Gungahlin Hill we renamed “Poon Hill” in honour of Richard Poon. It was an easy 4.5Km stroll, but took 2 1/4 hrs. Several of us adjourned to the Soccer Club for coffee | |

Part of Dennis’ work at Geoscience Australia is to assess the likely cost to the nation of natural disasters and possible natural disasters.
