93 | 19 Jun Thu 9.00AM start | Orroral Heritage Walk Namadgi & De Salis Cemetery | 10 of us met at the Shed & left by 8.00AM & met one more at Tharwa by 8.50AM. We then took a trip along the Murrumbidgee shore to the De Salis Cemetery behind Outward Bound & near the junction with the Gudgenby River where 18 people from the 1800’s are buried. Spoke to a farmer on way back who has quite a collection of free range chooks close to the walking track. He protects them with an electric fence & two hardy Italian dogs. 2.9Km return, Easy, 1Hr. We then dropped most at the Orroral Campground & drove 3 cars to the Tracking Station & returned in a 4th car. We then walked along the Heritage Trail to the Tracking Station stopping to view historical sites along the way. The main site was the Orroral Homestead from the 1860’s, the Shearing Shed from the 1930’s & the site of the Gregory’s House from the 1950’s. At the tracking station we walked past the main dish site & some of us visited the 6m & 9m antennae sites. 6.9Km, Medium, 2.5 hrs including breaks (would have been 6km if we didn’t visit the Woolshed & extra antennae sites). We returned home by 3PM. Initially it was overcast & quite cool but warmed up along the open & sunny Orroral Valley. The valley is literally owned by kangaroos which are everywhere. On the way back we stopped at Tharwa for basic coffee at Val Jeffreys general store.Walkers: Bob Salmond, Brian Taylor, Colin Fitzpatrick, Don Gruber, Ian Cameron, John Marsh, Peter Hatfield, Ray Nelson, Richard Poon, Wally Kulesza, Greg Hutchison Drivers: Greg, Bob Salmond, Colin Fitzpatrick, Ian Cameron | Google Photos | Map of De Salis walk | Map of Orroral Walk | Google Earth GPS file | Diana Tan’s notes | Wuth Walks notes | Dave’s notes on De Salis | Maremma Guardian Dog used by the egg farmer at Tharwa |

We then climbed to the top of Little Mt Majura and found the Cubbyhouse all gone. However we noted the extensive Kurrajong trees in this area and the nice walking dopwn to the road and up to Mt Majura. The radar was turned off as several men were working on the actual radar antenna. We returned via main ascent trail detouring to visit the dams. Medium-Hard, 9.5Km, 3.24 hrs. We finished at 12.19PM. We had coffee afterwards at Maccas EPIC and arrived home about 1.20PM. We were joined by one more & then walked up Reef Hill to view the Stone Circle, returning along Heysen St, then taking an open area down to the Flood Memorial along Melrose Drive near the big roundabout. We were amazed by the numbers of Kangaroos in large numbers in the Illoura Horse paddocks just north of Oakey Hill. We then cross a stormwater drain on a new bridge to the middle of Yarra Glen to view the Propeller art piece correctly titled “Dinornis Maximus 2008” by Phil Price. Its a 11m wind activated kinetic structure using a fully sealed rolling bearing system. It is supposed to be a combination of movement that provides flow and dance. Then we headed south across the large roundabout and under its south end but we were on the east side of the storm water drain path. We had to climb over one fence cross a bridge and then climb another small gate. Some of the graffiti along the channel is quite spectacular. We then past the Town Centre park & stopped at Woden Town Plaza for coffee at Gloria Jeans. Then it was back through Lyons shops to view the art piece “On The Road Again” & back over Oakey Hill to the cars by 12.30PM, Overall it took 4 hrs but this included about a total of 1 hours of breaks. 9.8Km, Medium, 3 hrs walking. 87 | 27 Feb Thu 7.30AM start | Kama & Molonglo Nature Reserves | 5 of us met at the Shed & joined 2 more at the start point along William Hovell Drive. At 7.30AM we walked down to Molonglo River pipeline track and then continued west for a Km or more before returning back past our initial point and returned up the eastern side of Kama NR. In the Molonglo section we noted sheep grazing to reduce fuel loads whilst in Kama spraying had occurred to reduce weed loads. Also TAMS had shot kangaroos last winter to save the grasslands. They have been doing at lot in Kama to reduce weeds & plant some trees but its clearly been a heavily grazed location in the past. With the three dams its a nice location for kangaroos & birdlife. Medium 8.9Km, 2.5 hrs. Walkers: Colin Fitzpatrick, Drew McDonald, Bob Salmond, Harry Redfern, Ian Cameron, John Edge, Greg Hutchison Drivers: Greg, Bob, Harry & Drew. Afterwards 6 of us retired to Maccas Kippax for coffeee & cake. For future access note CP is 2.1Km along Hovell Drive past Drake Brockman roundabout. It is a sharp turn to left onto dirt track. We started walking at 7.36AM and went around the western and northern edges of the Nature Reserve to the Osage Orange Tree which was not in fruit. Apparently the locals call the tree the brain tree as the Osage orange looks like a brain. We then went to the sites of the old Charnwood & Croajingalong homestead sites & then back along the eastern side along the road finishing at 9.55AM. The car park was on Toft St (off Kerrigan St, Lance Hill Ave & James Harrison St) Dunlop. Easy, 7.7Km, 2 hs 20m. We then walked down a trail on east side of Murrumbidge until the trail stopped and returned along the same route. We noticed quite a lot of weeds along the route including the herb Dill and lots of Blackberries. Drew and Greg feasted quite well on the latter. John amused himself trying to tread on a brown snake as well as spotting a sleeping black snake. We later drove through numerous ‘shorts cuts’ in Weston to have morning tea at Maccas Weston. We finished the walk by 9.15AM and were home about 10.40AM. Easy-Medium, 6.8Km, 1hr 40m. Along the way we looked at & were interested by the various newish signs outlining the natural aspects and history of Red Hill. For the last sprint back along the ridge to Red Hill we split into two but made the Redhill Lookout cafe without getting wet. Heavy rain fell soon after we made it to the cafe at about 11AM. Medium, 7.7Km, 2.5 hrs. Great views with a little climbing. Walkers: Bob Salmond, Colin Fitzpatrick, Drew McDonald, Harry Redfern, Ian Cameron, John Edge, Ray Nelson, Greg Hutchison Drivers: Bob, Harry, Ray & Drew | Google Photos | Map of the walk | Google Earth GPS file |
81 | | Canberra Centernary Trail – Hall to One Tree Hill | Most of us met by 8.40AM at the Shed & drove in multiple vehicles to Hall where we were met by the rest by 9AM. We left outside Gumnut Café (cnr of Victoria and Gladstone Sts) & followed a section of the Hall circular walk to the ACTEW water tanks then the CCT to One Tree Hill & back via the School & main road past the Hall Premiere Store. The CCT is a new walking & cycling track with the last bit near One Tree Hill being a steep incline. Views are great & you can see all Gungahlin, Belconnen, Civic & even Woden towers. We finished with coffee at the Gumnut Cafe. Medium-Hard, 10.2Km, 3 hrs walking. As Drew brought up Geocaching it was fitting that he found one on One Tree Hill FireFinderII and Greg the other Perserverance. You can read about Geocaching here. Walkers: Barry Howe, Bob Eagers, Colin Fitzpatrick, Don Gruber, Drew McDonald, Harry Redfern, Jim Grenfell. John Edge, Ray Nelson, Richard Poon, Wally Kulesza, Greg Hutchison Drivers: all except John Edge & Bob Eagers. Greg hit his head on something at One Tree Hill and required Jim to patch his bleeding head with a monster bandage. Jim has reported his knee as playing up again. Harry left after half way and returned early as he had an appointment. We also could see the final link in Horse Park Drive being built around the north west edge of Gungahlin. | Google Photos | Map of the walk | Google Earth GPS file |
80 | | Molonglo Gorge | 7 of us met at the Shed by 8.30AM and drove in 2 cars via Limestone Ave, the airport, Pialligo Rd, to the Kowen Forest turnoff just north of Queanbeyan, & thence to the car park for the Molonglo Gorge walk. We were met by the 8th member Drew who drove his motor-bike. We started walking about 9.20AM and unfortunately on the way along the rocky & elevated track one of the guys became slightly effected by vertigo. He was assisted in returning by Don Gruber who volunteered as he has already done the walk. We continued onto the Blue Tiles picnic area for a rest & then returned taking the lower river option for the last 0.5 Km or so. This is a simple walk but its a narrow, rocky track, with various short sharp climbs & descents. It is technically a medium walk but is somewhat strenuous with the rock hoping and ups and downs encountered. Also some of the track is quite exposed with no protection on the downhill side into the gorge. Its quite odd that the lesser exposed sections are often protected with a solid metal guard rail. We were a little lucky & saw a Countrylink Explorer train traverse the gorge on its way Sydney to Canberra & as we returned to the cars it went past heading for Sydney on its return leg. Afterwards 5 of us went to Maccas at Queanbeyan for coffee & toasted sandwich specials. Medium-Hard, 7Km, Walking time 2.7 hrs Walkers: Colin Fitzpatrick, Don Gruber, Drew McDonald, Ian Cameron, John Edge, John Marsh, Richard Poon, Greg Hutchison Drivers: Ian Cameron, Colin Fitzpatrick, Drew McDonald (Motor-bike). Notes: Access was Pialligo Road past the airport, then turn left before Qbn & head towards Sutton. After about 1Km turn right into Kowen Forest. Its now a dirt road. Then after about another 500m turn right to the Molonglo Gorge picnic area. Then park near its end (its now bitumen again). | Google Photos | Map of the walk | Map of the locale of the walk | Google Earth GPS file |
79 | | Mt Ainslie Quarries | 8 of us met at the Shed by 8.30AM & drove in 2 cars to Mt Ainslie Drive near corner of Fairbairn Ave just past war Memorial. Here we met 2 more. From 9.10AM we walked up a fire trail, then through some open woodland & underneath a powerline until we met the Quarry Tk Loop (West) FT & then climbed it & the Kokoda FT. Then it was through a nice casuarina forest footpad to the main Quarry. We then took a MTB trail on steep climb onto the main Mt Ainslie track, which we took down to the Brigade Hill memorial location. Then it was another track around to the other Quarry. Here we were intrigued by an obvious drill hole showing on the face of the excavated rock & a piece of graffiti looking like a kangaroo with a diving helmet & a title nearby of “Two Shoes”. Then it was easy fire trails back to the car. It was medium walk, 5.4Km, 1.75 hrs walking. Afterwards we drove to the AWM cafe & had coffee & cake, except for Bob who had a special yoghurt & muesli concoction! Walkers: Blair Howden, Bob Salmond, Colin Fitzpatrick, Don Gruber, Drew McDonald, John Arundel, John Marsh, Ray Nelson, Wally Kulesza, Greg Hutchison Drivers: Bob Salmond, Blair Howden, Colin Fitzpatrick, Drew (motor bike) | Google Photos | Map of the walk | Google Earth GPS file |
78 | | Mt Majura Dams | Due to a forecast that caused a total fire ban, TAMS has closed most of the Reserves & Namadgi including Googong. Thus at the last minute we had to alter the day’s trip. So we chose Majura dams trip which was easy to plan & not too strenuous. 6 of us met at the Shed by 8.30AM and drove to Kellaway St, Hackett. We commenced walking about 8.55AM on footpads to the base of Mt Majura, then up tracks to the east visiting two dams. We then returned along the TSR Track on a ridgeline which afforded nice views over the Majura valley showing the new parkway construction as well as the airport, then down down some side paths and back to the car. 4 of us participated in toasted sangers or cakes & coffee at Maccas Dickson. Easy-Medium, 6.1Km, <2hrs. Walkers: Blair Howden, Bob Salmond, John Edge, John Marsh, Ray Nelson, Greg Hutchison Drivers: Ray Nelson & Greg Hutchison. Notes: The Upper Hackett Reservoir weas built in 1960s to provide water for Hackett, Dickson & Watson. To manage any overflow two earthen small dams were built, which these days are an important source of water for the local wildlife. The Friends of Majura received a Government grant in 2005 to enhance the degraded old ams and have worked to restore some of the degraded landscape so they can create a better wetland environment. This then is the little side valley that abuts the southern edges of Mt Majura and which make as nice environment to visit. The old and new metal reservoirs are still located up the hill to the east just near the boundary with the Majura Pines | Google Photos | Map of the walk | Google Earth GPS file |
77 | | Kambah Pool – Murrumbidgee Lookout | 6 of us met at the Shed by 8.35AM & were joined by 1 more at Kambah Pool where we started a walk north at 9.10AM to a Lookout & returned by 12PM. Nice walk along undulating terrain with some climbs & rocky track. Some good views of the Murrumbidgee & surrounding country. We unfortunately encountered strong winds & some showers. One member missed us at the turnoff to the Lookout & raced back to the cars thinking we were ahead. (We need to institute more care so that we don’t lose anyone & cause any undue distress). Ended with coffee & sandwiches at Maccas Weston. We should be bestowed honory membership of this place. Medium, 8.4Km, 2.5 hrs walking, 300m ascent and descent. We actually went past the lookout and if we didn’t it would have been a 7Km walk. Car Distance was about 61km return. Walkers: Bob Salmond, Colin Fitzpatrick, John Edge, John Marsh, Ray Nelson, Richard Poon, Greg Hutchison Drivers: Bob Salmond, Colin Fitzpatrick & Greg Hutchison | Google Photos | Map of the walk | Google Earth GPS file | References: Stuart’s book walk No 28. 76 | | Orroral Ridge – Legoland (Namadgi) | 8 of us met by 8.35AM at the Shed and drove in two cars to the Collimation Tower Carpark 4.5Km west of Honeysuckle Ck camp ground. We then walked from about 9.55AM out to Tower Rocks Lkt and back & then out to Legoland & Trojan Walls along the Orroral Ridge. Great views of Orroral Valley & Legoland Caves. The walk is largely level with some care needed near cliffs & caves. We met some Outward bound group at the car park & again at the northern side of the Trojan Walls. Also another group was passed walking up the road from Honeysuckle Ck. After the walk which finished about 11.55PM we stopped at the old Honeysuckle Tracking station site for 10 mins & also had coffee & snacks at Maccas Lanyon Marketplace at Conder. We saw a beautiful Red Neck Wallaby near the tracking station site. Arrived home at 2PM. Easy-Medium, 4.2Km, 2hrs.(We didn’t do the optional extra walk out to the Belfry. extra 2.2Km) . Car Distance was about 138km (140km via Coppins Crossing and Molonglo) so we shared petrol costs with passengers offering the drive $5. We then went via Harry’s street where he described his efforts to maintain the tranquillity of his place against unit developments to Maccas at Kippax for coffee and sandwiches etc. Then it was back through Latham at a leisurely pace along paths and the creek. We then took the stepping stones option across the creek getting slightly wet feet and back to the cars by 12PM. Easy 7.3Km, around 2.5 hrs walking.
